The Gracie Press Newsletter - Possibilities For Illustrations And Design
Our weekly newsletter usually includes a story excerpt. This week, we are doing something completely different, and we hope you like it. This is a way to preview our next book as a visual story, and maybe you will learn to speak a little Chicken as well!

Section Titles And Illustrations
The idea of dividing a longer book into sections is a good one, especially if it is for upper elementary school readers. They get a feeling of completion not only from each chapter but also from each section.
So how do you make those sections stand out? Well, for me, I tried doing it by giving each section a special page with a special title. The idea is to make each section feel like a shorter book with each section having its own key full-page illustration.
This is similar to the way musical animated cartoons are planned. The songs occur at important points in the story and help to tell the story all by themselves. Here, the key illustrations do the same with a little help from the title.
So What Do You Think?
I have to tell you I really like the full-page illustrations.
Someone had mentioned once they wished the illustrations could be larger and take up the full page. Just so you know, I took that to heart when working on The Shoebox!
But what do you think? Should we use full-page illustrations throughout?
Here is an example of a half-page chapter title plus illustration. This is how the book is currently designed.
Here is an example of a full-page chapter title plus illustration as it might look.
This would mean that the seven section pages need to be modified visually to differentiate them. Maybe something like below?
This is like a “negative” image of the chapter pages, and the oval looks more like an egg. Plus with all of the white space, it is like a “rest” before beginning the next section.
As always, your thoughts and feedback is truly appreciated!
Until Next Time…
